During the height of Shurima's power, the Ascended created weapons capable of holding immense magical energy. However, when their creations—the Darkin—rebelled, these same artifacts were repurposed as prisons. The steel was enchanted to trap the rebellious beings within, forcing them to exist only through the weapon itself. This substance became known for its ability to sustain a soul indefinitely without decay. Over centuries, these blades scattered across Runeterra, hidden or forgotten until they were rediscovered by those seeking power. Each shard of Soulsteel carries the consciousness of its Darkin occupant, waiting for a host strong enough to wield it yet weak enough to be corrupted. The most infamous example remains Aatrox's greatsword, which has consumed countless armies in its quest to break the seal that binds him.

In Their Own Story

The soldier gripped the hilt, feeling the cold bite of the metal against his palm. It hummed, a low vibration that traveled up his arm and settled deep within his chest. The battlefield was silent now, save for the wind whistling through broken banners. He looked down at the blade; it seemed to drink the moonlight, turning black as oil. A voice whispered in his mind, not with sound, but with memory. It showed him glory, then ruin, then hunger. He raised the weapon to strike a fallen enemy, but the steel moved before he did. The soldier realized too late that he was no longer holding the blade; the blade was holding him.

Reader's Guide

Soulsteel functions as both a weapon and a containment vessel for Darkin entities. In-world mechanics suggest it does not require traditional maintenance, instead feeding on ambient magical energy or life force to maintain its structural integrity. Mortals who attempt to wield Soulsteel risk rapid corruption. The metal bonds with the user's soul, gradually replacing their will with that of the imprisoned entity. This makes it unsuitable for standard armies and often leads to the creation of Darkin champions like Aatrox or Rhaast. Only those with immense spiritual resistance can temporarily control these blades without losing themselves. Even then, prolonged exposure results in physical mutation and eventual possession by the dark spirit trapped within the steel.
